Dr. Whigham's appointment to benefit obesity prevention in the region

Dr. Leah D. Whigham, Executive Director for the Paso del Norte Institute for Healthy Living (IHL) was recently selected to serve on the Obesity Society Council as Clinical Practice Councilor and on the Advocacy Committee.
As a Clinical Practice Councilor, Dr. Whigham will serve a three-year term, which includes oversight of and reporting about committees, sectors and task forces with a primary responsibility of coordinating activities to meet strategic plan goals and strategies of the Obesity Society Council. Foundation awards grants to support healthy youth

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded 12 grants for more than $1,247,000 under the Healthy Relationships Priority Area – IGNITE Initiative. The goal of the IGNITE initiative is to work with community organizations and schools to improve health outcomes of youth through participation in out-of-school programs.
Funded organizations are:
Creative Kids, Inc. - $91,944.60 Project ABLE (Art Brokers Learning Experiences) To offer an after-school and summer visual arts education program for 115 disconnected youth 7-18 years old in Fabens, TX.

The number of Lung/Bronchus Cancer drop in El Paso County

A recent report indicates that the incidence (# per 100,000 residents) of lung/bronchus cancer in El Paso County has dropped from 48/100,000 in 1995 to 30.9/100,000 in 2011. This is about a 35% drop. The state incidence dropped about 30% during the same period. El Paso’s age-adjusted rate is also much lower than the state’s overall.
Decreased adult smoking likely contributed to the reduction in the incidence of lung cancer in El Paso.

Through the use of videos, 300 students in eight media technology classes at several middle and high schools in Las Cruces Public Schools, participated in a project that challenged them to develop health messages that would improve nutrition and activity habits on their school campus.

Why are fruit and vegetable purchase and consumption relatively low? This may be because current grocery store nutrition interventions do not consider powerful applications of in-store marketing. This report explores the possibility of using in-store marketing to target fruit and vegetable purchases that may not only benefit economic concerns of retailers, but also economic and nutritional concerns of shoppers.
Two individuals join Foundation Staff

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation is pleased to welcome two individuals to the Foundation team: Faviola Porras and Angelina Velazco.
As the Accounting Support Assistant, Ms. Porras will provide accurate and timely reports, payroll, payables, and other accounting functions as needed.
Angelina Velazco is the welcoming face and voice when visiting or calling the office. She will also provide administrative and general clerical support in her position as Operations Support Assistant.
