Become a Community Scientist – Share Your Voice, Shape Health Research

August 22, 2025

The UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in El Paso invites local community members to join its Community Scientists Program.

This unique opportunity empowers you to share your experiences and perspectives to help improve health research. As a community scientist, you’ll provide feedback to researchers on how to better connect with communities, especially racial minorities and cancer survivors, in all stages of their studies—from design and recruitment to overcoming barriers that may prevent participation.

Why Join?

  • Make a difference: Your insights help ensure research reflects our community’s real needs, values, and cultural experiences.
  • Learn & grow: Receive training to understand the research process and contribute meaningfully.
  • Be heard: Share your lived experiences with health conditions such as cancer to help researchers develop more effective approaches.
  • Earn rewards: Attend monthly sessions and receive a $25 gift card per session.

How It Works

Community scientists meet once a month to discuss research projects and provide valuable feedback. This program streamlines communication between researchers and the community, ensuring studies are more inclusive, effective, and impactful. Interested in becoming a voice for your community?
