Board Training Empowers Nonprofit Leaders to Serve with Integrity
March 9, 2026
Individuals who join a nonprofit board are driven by purpose and desire to give back, and the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, in partnership with the United Way of El Paso County, works to ensure they are fully prepared for the responsibilities that come with board service. In stepping into this voluntary role, board members take on significant legal, fundraising, and fiduciary duties, including the critical responsibility of providing ethical, diligent oversight of financial assets to assure donors that their contributions directly support the causes they value.
Since 2013, the Health Foundation has offered Board Training to strengthen ethical governance practices across the nonprofit sector. This year, courses have been updated to help boards navigate digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and evolving donor expectations, while continuing to build foundational nonprofit knowledge.
“Board Training is about strengthening the foundation of our community through nonprofit service. The importance of this program is two-fold: Strengthening current board service to sustainably lead and succeed in our region and inspiring a new generation of leaders to become well-equipped for board service,” said Georgina Hernández, President and CEO of United Way of El Paso County.
“We believe effective governance requires integrity, accountability, and strong leadership. By adapting our Board Training, we are training thoughtful leaders who are ready to give back, guide organizations with purpose, and help our community thrive for years to come,” Hernández said.
Designed for individuals or entire boards to participate together, the training features:
- Virtual and in-person sessions that support flexibility and regional reach
- Bilingual content to support cross-border collaboration Guidance on managing board meetings, including agendas, minutes and building strong partnerships with CEOs
- Clear understanding of legal and ethical board responsibilities
Board Training is an initiative of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation and a key component of its Health Leadership priority area. In addition to its partnership with United Way of El Paso County in El Paso, the Foundation collaborates with the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico to offer courses in Doña Ana, Otero, and Luna counties and with the Fundación Paso del Norte to offer training for participants in Cd. Juárez.
