Texas Transportation Commission Awards Major Funding to Advance Paso del Norte Trail

November 17, 2025

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation is pleased to share that the Texas Transportation Commission has approved significant new funding to support the continued development of the Paso del Norte Trail. This investment will help complete additional trail segments that will benefit residents across the City and County of El Paso.

The Commission approved Transportation Alternatives funding for two trail segments:

  • City of El Paso Segment (2.16 miles): This project will extend the existing shared-use path along Magoffin Avenue to the El Paso Zoo, strengthening multimodal connections in Central El Paso.
  • El Paso County Segment (5.8 miles): This project will create a continuous link between the communities of Socorro, San Elizario, and Clint, enhancing access to recreation, heritage sites, and active transportation options along the Mission Valley.

Together, these projects represent more than $31 million in new investment, bringing the total amount secured for the Paso del Norte Trail to $88 million. To date, 21 miles of the 70-mile trail are complete, and 31 additional miles are funded for design or construction—a major milestone for this regionally significant initiative.

The Texas Transportation Commission remains committed to providing a safe, reliable, and integrated transportation system that supports the movement of people and goods while fostering economic growth.

Supported by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, the Paso del Norte Trail is a community-driven, collaborative effort to develop a county-wide, 70-mile trail that showcases the region’s natural and cultural assets. The trail is designed to promote active transportation, celebrate the Rio Grande, support economic development and ecotourism, and create meaningful educational and volunteer opportunities—making healthy living an easy choice for communities across our unique, binational region.
