Celebrate Trails Day: How the Community Came together to Celebrate the Paso del Norte Trail

Recently, the Paso del Norte Trail, in collaboration with Eco El Paso, El Paso Water, and the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department, hosted “Celebrate Trails Day: Planting Roots with the Community” on the Playa Drain Trail.
With the help of over 130 volunteers and generous donations, 25 trees were planted along the Playa Drain Trail from Mimosa Avenue to Durrill Road. Trees are an essential amenity and enhance the trail experience by providing cooling effects, improving air quality, promoting physical activity, and more.

Investing $4.17 million to promote Healthy Living in 2023

In 2023, the Health Foundation invested $4.17 million to support 46 grants under the Healthy Living priority area to promote positive behaviors that prevent disease, including healthy eating, physical activity, smoking/vaping prevention, and positive opportunities for youth. Featured grantees include Border Partners, La Semilla Food Center, The BOOST Network, Centro de Asesoría y Promoción A.C., La Nube, Paso del Norte Trail, and A Smoke-Free Paso del Norte.

In recognition of National Autism Month, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation highlights the PEERS program at New Mexico State University (NMSU)
The Autism Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) is a partnership with the NMSU Papen-Aprendamos Autism Diagnostic Center (ADC). With funding from the Health Foundation’s Mental Health and Emotional Initiative, support is provided to ADC in implementing the PEERS program for at least 50 participants 18 months to 17 years of age who live in Doña Ana, Luna, and Otero counties.

The Health Foundation hosted an information session in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at the Burrell College Osteopathic Medicine for nonprofit organizations in Doña Ana, Luna, and Otero Counties. The program team shared the mission of the Health Foundation and the work we do to improve the region’s health in three priority areas: Healthy Living, Disease Prevention and Management, and Health Leadership. Congratulations to Kellie Burns-Franco, Director of Development for the Paso del Norte Community Foundation, on being selected to serve on the Emergence Health Network Board of Trustees.

The El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium (Consortium) gathered at El Paso Community College in March to acknowledge collaborations and improvements in the mental health and substance use service systems for children, youth, and families.
