The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded 12 grants for more than $1,247,000 under the Healthy Relationships Priority Area – IGNITE Initiative. The goal of the IGNITE initiative is to work with community organizations and schools to improve health outcomes of youth through participation in out-of-school programs.
Funded organizations are:
Creative Kids, Inc. - $91,944.60 Project ABLE (Art Brokers Learning Experiences) To offer an after-school and summer visual arts education program for 115 disconnected youth 7-18 years old in Fabens, TX.

The community of south El Paso along with students, staff and faculty of Bowie High School will soon work together to educate people on growing, preparing, selling and consuming nutritious food for a healthy lifestyle. With support from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) initiative and La Semilla Food Center, a food coordinator will be hired. A recent report indicates that the incidence (# per 100,000 residents) of lung/bronchus cancer in El Paso County has dropped from 48/100,000 in 1995 to 30.9/100,000 in 2011. This is about a 35% drop. The state incidence dropped about 30% during the same period. El Paso’s age-adjusted rate is also much lower than the state’s overall.
Decreased adult smoking likely contributed to the reduction in the incidence of lung cancer in El Paso.

Through the use of videos, 300 students in eight media technology classes at several middle and high schools in Las Cruces Public Schools, participated in a project that challenged them to develop health messages that would improve nutrition and activity habits on their school campus.

Shopper Marketing Nutrition Intervention
Why are fruit and vegetable purchase and consumption relatively low? This may be because current grocery store nutrition interventions do not consider powerful applications of in-store marketing. This report explores the possibility of using in-store marketing to target fruit and vegetable purchases that may not only benefit economic concerns of retailers, but also economic and nutritional concerns of shoppers.

As the Accounting Support Assistant, Ms. Porras will provide accurate and timely reports, payroll, payables, and other accounting functions as needed.

Like most public health challenges, alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences affect everyone. But in a society where drinking is often associated with family gatherings, sports events, and celebrations, it’s easy to think “it’s not my problem” or “they’re not my kids” or “they’re just having fun.” Many of us have likely seen statistics about underage drinking and had exactly these thoughts.
