Keeping El Paso Safe in the Summer Heat

Keeping El Paso Safe in the Summer Heat

June 24, 2025

With temperatures continuing to rise, the City of El Paso and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) are taking action to keep our community safe. Cooling centers are now open across the city to provide relief and prevent heat-related illness and injury.

Where to Find Relief

Designated Recreation Centers and Public Libraries are now serving as Cooling Centers throughout the El Paso area. These air-conditioned facilities offer a safe, comfortable space for individuals and families seeking shelter from the heat.

How to Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

Residents are urged to take simple but important steps to protect themselves and others:

  • Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water; avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks
  • Dress smart – Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
  • Limit outdoor activity – Especially during the hottest parts of the day (usually 10 a.m.– 4 p.m.)
  • Cool down indoors – Stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible
  • Protect your skin – Use sunscreen and take frequent breaks when outdoors
  • Never leave anyone in a parked car – Not children, older adults, or pets—even for a few minutes

Check In and Look Out

Use the Buddy System: Regularly check on neighbors, co-workers, and loved ones—especially those who are elderly, have health conditions, or live alone. Your awareness and action can prevent serious health risks and even save lives.
