Parent Cafés: A Safe Space to Strengthen Families and Support Mental Health
May 20, 2025
This month, we’re proud to spotlight the El Paso Center for Children and its transformative Parent Cafés—an initiative supported by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation with funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Children’s Bureau.
Parent Cafés are more than just informational sessions—they are safe, welcoming spaces where parents and caregivers connect, share experiences, and build the resilience and skills needed to support their families. Through open dialogue and peer support, families explore key protective factors, reduce the stigma around seeking help, and access vital resources such as counseling and educational workshops.
The impact extends beyond the individual. Parent Cafés empower parents to take on leadership roles, including serving as facilitators and participating in the Family Advisory Council. This inclusive approach ensures that family voices shape the programs and services that affect them, an approach widely recognized as a best practice in child and family services.
Thanks to strong partnerships with local organizations, including the Juvenile Probation Department, Parent Cafés are reaching families who need support the most, helping ensure that every parent and caregiver has access to the tools and community they deserve.
