Health Foundation awards 10 grants under the Healthy Eating Initiative

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded 10 grants totaling more than $2.3 million under the Healthy Living priority area. These grants will support nutritious meals, physical activity, home gardens, teacher training, and cooking education programs that help children and adults in the border region live healthier lives.

To provide nutritious meals and nutrition education to 100 children five days a week in Rancho Anapra and Lomas de Poleo in Ciudad Juarez, MX.

Local Educator learns the daily work of improving health in the region

Ms. Helga Ericka Kihara, an instructional coach at Canutillo Elementary, shadowed staff from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation and the Paso del Norte Community Foundation for one week as part of the CREEED Educator Externship program.

The unique externship program partners with regional businesses and local school districts to provide current educators with a one-week paid externship at a business facility. Investing in Disease Prevention and Management

In 2023, the Health Foundation invested $3.02 million to support 42 grants under the Disease Prevention & Management priority area to advance efforts to prevent and manage diabetes and mental illness across the region.

2023 grantees included:

  • Texas Tech Hunt School of Dental Medicine, providing patients who visit the Texas Tech Dental Oral Health Clinic with a routine dental exam and the opportunity to test their A1C;

Health Foundation awards $4.5 million grant for UTEP Health

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently announced a $4.5 million matching grant to The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to increase the number and quality of health occupations in the El Paso region.

The grant will support UTEP Health, a comprehensive initiative aimed at elevating the region’s healthcare standards. It encompasses more than 4,400 students in the College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, and other health professions, programs, and research.

Health Foundation awards $3 million grant to expand diabetes education

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently announced a $3 million to support the expansion of the El Paso Center for Diabetes’ educational programs and services to meet the needs of the thousands of people in the community living with diabetes.

Nearly 15% of El Paso adults now have diabetes, outpacing the national average of 11.3%. Over the past five years, there has been a surge in the need for diabetes services.
