Sheriff Wiles receives Consortium Mental Health Champion Award

July 26, 2023

El Paso County Sheriff Wiles was honored with the Consortium Mental Health Champion Award for his significant contributions to regional mental healthcare by the El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium.

Tracy J. Yellen, CEO of the Health Foundation and Consortium Chair, presented the award during Consortium’s General meeting, which included dozens of mental health and justice system leaders.

“Sheriff Wiles has demonstrated exemplary leadership in expanding mental health services and awareness across the justice system – from training Sheriff Department employees in mental health first aid to creating a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) to respond to mental health crises in El Paso County,” said Tracy Yellen.

Sheriff Wiles was further recognized with a Congressional Resolution presented by Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, who has worked closely with Sherriff Wiles since her time as El Paso County Judge.

“Sheriff Wiles has long been a champion for mental health who, from the inception of the El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium almost 10 years ago, assembled the Justice Leadership Council to implement policy and practice improvements,” said Congresswoman Escobar. “I am very grateful to thoughtful leaders like Sheriff Wiles, who work tirelessly to solve some of the most complex behavioral health challenges in our community.”
