Healthy Habits to Adopt in 2024

January 18, 2024

As we enter into the new year, it’s the perfect time to prioritize your health and well-being. Adopting healthy habits is crucial for a balanced and fulfilling life. In 2024, let’s commit to making positive changes promoting health, including sensible eating, regular exercise, avoiding tobacco or vaping, and fostering our mental well-being. The Health Foundation supports grantees that work in each of these areas. You can learn more here or at the links below.

1. Sensible Eating:
Choose a variety of whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. These provide essential nutrients for optimal health. Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating. Listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues and savor each bite. The El Paso Center for Diabetes offers Sabrosa Vida cooking classes with support from the Health Foundation. 2. Regular Exercise:
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. This could include brisk walking, jogging, cycling, or engaging in sports. Include strength training exercises at least twice a week to build and maintain muscle mass and improve overall physical health. Use the Paso del Norte Trail as part of your routine. The Health Foundation is a proud partner in building this 68-mile trail across El Paso County.

3. Avoiding Tobacco and Vaping: If you smoke, consider seeking support to quit. Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term health benefits. Avoid the use of e-cigarettes and vaping products. Research indicates potential health risks associated with these products. Learn more about vaping/smoking prevention and cessation thanks to the efforts of Health Foundation grantee Action for Healthy Kids and the Smoke/Vapefree Paso del Norte.

4. Support Mental Health: Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga. Maintain strong social connections. Spending time with loved ones can provide emotional support and reduce loneliness. If you’re struggling with mental health, don’t hesitate to seek help from a mental health professional. They can provide guidance and support. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - El Paso offers free counseling resources for children and youth in partnership with El Paso area school districts. The Paso del Norte Health Foundation has taken proactive steps to improve the health of the region. In partnership with various nonprofit organizations, they offer a range of healthy programs designed to support your well-being.
