Local artist brings to life the work done on smoking and vaping in our region

June 23, 2022

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation has partnered with local artist and graphic designer Vanessa Clark to artistically bring to life the work of the Tobacco Control Network and the Smoke-Free and Vape-Free Initiative.

A Smoke-Free Paso del Norte is an initiative of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, which was launched in 1999 to provide a comprehensive tobacco control initiative founded on CDC best practices.

The Tobacco Control Network is a collaboration of key stakeholders working to help inform the public on the importance of knowing the facts about smoking and vaping in the Paso del Norte region.

In recognition of everyone’s hard work, this art piece was commissioned to capture the change and good it has done for the El Paso community.

Together we will continue to Lung.Live.El Paso!

Although current youth smoking rates have decreased, the use of electronic cigarettes and youth vaping has now overtaken smoking. According to the recent National Youth Tobacco Survey, E-cigarettes were the most commonly ever used tobacco product overall. Less is known about vaping, but science confirms that nicotine negatively affects the adolescent brain and is addictive. E-cigarette use among youth also is linked with use of other tobacco products as well as alcohol and marijuana abuse.

Smoking is still the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.
