Message from Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer

We are pleased to share the Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s (Health Foundation) 2016 Annual Report, which features the work of our partners and grantees, accounts for the financial resources in our care and highlights our promise for the future.

In 2016, the Health Foundation invested $8.9 million partnering with 87 grantees across five priority areas. Notable investments included a $6 million pledge to support the new Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center-El Paso Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine and expanded work in the areas of mental and behavioral health, healthy eating and active living, alcohol prevention, youth out-of-school programs and REALIZE Executive and Board leadership development.

The Health Foundation ended the year with $217.4 million in assets, up from $130 million in 1996, keeping administrative expenses below 1% of foundation assets and bringing total grantmaking since inception to nearly $163 million. We worked with our family of foundations, the Paso del Norte Charitable Foundation and Fundación Paso del Norte para la Salud y Bienestar, to inspire and leverage philanthropy to further the Health Foundation’s impact in the region.

The Board of Directors and staff spent considerable time in 2016 working on its Strategic Plan 2021 to guide the Foundation’s leadership and grantmaking over the next five years.

We extend our sincere thanks to the board, volunteers, staff, grantees and community stakeholders who have given generously of their time, expertise and resources to support the Health Foundation’s mission to lead, leverage and invest in initiatives, programs and policies that promote health and prevent disease in the Paso del Norte region.

It is through the collective impact of individuals and entities in our region that we will be successful in ensuring that the residents of our region have the knowledge, resources and skills to live healthy lives. We are investing in health today with the promise of a healthy tomorrow.
