Ribbon Cutting celebration of Segment II of Playa Drain Trail
April 22, 2023
In partnership with the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, the City of El Paso celebrated the addition of Segment II of the Playa Drain Trail with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Health Foundation senior program officer Jana Renner provided comments during the ceremony, joining City Council Representative Henry Rivera, neighborhood association leaders, city staff, and members of the community.
The newly completed segment stretches from Knights to Yarbrough Drive near Mission Valley’s Shawver Park. The $1.2 million investment allows visitors to walk, jog or cycle, and includes amenities such as trees, benches, lighting, pet waste stations, and more along the trail.
Funding for the new segment was made possible through a Community Development Block Grant and is part of an additional segment near Ysleta High School. The Health Foundation provided funding for the design of the Playa Drain Trail from Ascarate to Ysleta High School in partnership with the City, along with the Health Foundation’s contribution to the construction of the 3.2 miles of the trail from Ascarate to Riverside Park.
Once completed, the Playa Drain Trail will be 8.3 miles and part of a 68-mile county-wide Paso del Norte Trail that will span the length of El Paso County when completed.
Following the ceremony, Live Active El Paso invited guests to a one-mile fun walk/run along the trail.
