Funding to support out-of-school providers to develop healthy kids in the region

July 15, 2024

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation is pleased to announce a 2-year, $515,000 grant to the United Way of El Paso County to manage the BOOST Network and serve as the backbone organization for the Health Foundation’s Healthy Kids Initiative.

The BOOST Network is a hub for out-of-school time providers that work together to identify, explore, and create opportunities that increase the quality and effectiveness of afterschool programs for youth and families in our communities. The United Way provides technical assistance, leadership, and coordination to regional nonprofits and out-of-school (OST) providers, thereby increasing awareness of the network.

United Way’s leadership in OST fosters collaboration among providers, offering extensive training opportunities and emphasizing the significance of OST programs. They have established a steering committee to guide the BOOST Network, facilitating training and recruitment, and they maintain an online library of resources for OST professionals.

Through partnerships with organizations like the Texas Partnership for Out of School Time and the Dallas Afterschool Network, the United Way enhances the Network’s impact. Evaluation of their objectives includes tracking membership growth, engagement, social media reach, and newsletter metrics, alongside administering quality improvement tools and providing detailed progress reports to ensure continuous program enhancement.

PDNHF Initiative: Healthy Kids

The goal of the Healthy Kids Initiative is to improve a range of health outcomes by engaging disconnected youth in the Paso del Norte region in high quality programs during out-of-school hours. The Health Foundation refers to “disconnected youth” as people between the ages of 5-17 who are not involved in out-of-school activities or not working, and “disconnected young adults” as people between the ages of 16-24 who are not in school and not working. Evidence indicates that youth who are involved in out-of-school programs are less likely to use drugs, alcohol, or be involved in criminal activity. Well-designed youth activities increase protective factors needed for youth to lead healthy and productive lives.
