Texas Mutual Awards $285,000 to Support Diabetes Education and Prevention

December 11, 2025

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation is pleased to announce that it has received a $285,000 Healthcare Philanthropy Grant from Texas Mutual to expand and accelerate diabetes education, prevention, and management efforts across the Paso del Norte region. This grant builds on more than a decade of the Health Foundation’s leadership in advancing diabetes initiatives and reflects Texas Mutual’s commitment to leverages its grantmaking to support collaborative, evidence-based programs.

More than 15% of El Paso County residents live with diabetes, and thousands more are at risk. By investing in proven programs, this grant will strengthen diabetes prevention and management across the lifespan from lifestyle-change and Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) classes to community health worker engagement, gestational diabetes support for pregnant women, and expanded education for individuals newly diagnosed or struggling to manage the disease.

“Texas Mutual is committed to investing in organizations that are working to improve health and well-being in El Paso,” said Lillian Diaz Gray, Senior Community Affairs Program Manager for Texas Mutual. “We are pleased to partner with the Paso del Norte Health Foundation to leverage their community leadership and grantmaking and support nonprofit organizations working on the frontlines of diabetes education and prevention.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Texas Mutual for their generosity and partnership,” said Tracy J. Yellen, CEO of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation. “We look forward to deploying these additional resources with community partners including the El Paso Center for Diabetes, Project Amistad, Texas A&M Colonias Program, Project Vida, and Diabetes Alliance.“

“Texas Mutual’s investment strengthens our ability to expand diabetes services for individuals and families across the region,” said Audrey Garcia, Program Officer. “This grant allows us to reach more people through proven programs such as Diabetes Prevention Program classes, community health worker outreach, and gestational diabetes support. We encourage residents to take advantage of these programs so they can prevent diabetes or manage it more effectively. Together with our partners, we are committed to improving health outcomes and reducing the burden of diabetes in our communities.”

Texas Mutual is committed to strengthening communities, businesses, and working families across the state. In 2025, the company awarded more than $9 million in grants to nonprofits across Texas—including the Paso del Norte Health Foundation—to support initiatives that create safer, healthier, and more resilient communities.
