History

Providence Memorial Hospital opened its doors in 1952 as a not-for-profit medical facility providing the best available healthcare to all the people in the Paso del Norte region. In 1995, changes in the healthcare environment led to a decision to sell the hospital. In keeping with the tradition of excellence that had always been the hallmark of Providence, on October 1, 1995, the Board of Directors created the Paso del Norte Health Foundation.

With $130 million in assets from the sale of the hospital, the Health Foundation became one of the largest private Foundations on the U.S.-Mexico border. The goal of the Health Foundation was to carry on the work begun by Providence Memorial Hospital and to improve the health and wellness of the people living in west Texas, southern New Mexico and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico through education and prevention.

The Health Foundation envisions a region where all people, regardless of socio-economic status, have the knowledge, resources, and environment they need to live healthy lives.

Over the years, the Health Foundation stayed focused on health promotion with the development of several initiatives and programs in the health priorities of healthy eating and active living, tobacco and alcohol prevention, mental health and emotional well-being, healthy kids and health leadership.

The Health Foundation has invested more than $187 million in the pursuit of its mission, exceeding the $130 million that the Health Foundation initially received from the Providence Memorial sale. This investment includes grants to more than 300 organizations across the Paso del Norte region. Many of the Health Foundation’s senior staff have worked at the Health Foundation for more than 15 years and have participated in the transformation of the Health Foundation’s mission and its expanded leadership role in the community.

To help advance its mission and ensure the permanent sustainability of its work, in 2013 the Health Foundation established a new public charity called the Paso del Norte Community Foundation. Its mission is to support the philanthropic goals of individuals, families, corporations, foundations and nonprofit organizations to improve education, health, social services, economic development, and quality of life in the Paso del Norte region.

In 2015, the Foundation’s board made the decision to incorporate the Fundación Paso del Norte para la Salud y Bienestar in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. The mission of the Fundación Paso del Norte is to lead and promote partnerships and initiatives to improve health and quality of life for people in the Ciudad Juárez, Mexico region. With its own board and staff, the new asociación civil will work with key leaders in Ciudad Juárez to expand services and financial resources available to further this mission.

In 2018, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation became a supporting organization to the Paso del Norte Community Foundation to grow assets through philanthropy and increase grantmaking to improve health. The partnership creates operating efficiencies for both foundations by sharing executive, program and development staff as well as administrative, financial and investment support.
