Trailblazing 2018 Annual Report

Do not go where a path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

A Letter From our Board Chair & CEO

Dear Friends:

The Paso del Norte Community Foundation celebrated its 5th anniversary in 2018, forging new and expanding paths for philanthropy in our region.

We invested more than $4.1 million in charitable programs and projects driven by one or more of the 95 donor-advised, designated, scholarship and supporting organization funds under our umbrella which are committed to improving education, health, social services, economic development and quality of life in our region.

In partnership with our board, volunteers and staff, we:

  • Honored the life and legacy of loved ones like Deby Lewis, Archie Duran and Steve Hoy with charitable giving funds that make a measurable difference in the lives of others in our community.
  • Established new designated endowment funds like the Alan R. and Dr. Elizabeth Abbott Fund in honor of Dr. Jack Postlewaite for El Paso Children’s Hospital to provide resources for critical children’s health care.

Deby Lewis’s family established the Deby Lewis Foundation under the Paso del Norte Community Foundation to honor Deby’s lifelong commitment and contributions to students at Eastwood High School and within the Ysleta Independent School District. This year, the Lewis family and their friends led an extraordinary undertaking: selling more than 720 bricks that will adorn the sidewalks at the newly constructed Eastwood High School. Proceeds from the brick sales support scholarships for deserving graduating seniors at Eastwood. The Deby Lewis Foundation has funded more than $20,000 in scholarships since its inception.

When Adrianne Moody and Leyla Zeidan came together to mobilize other passionate parents, no dream was too big when it came to their kids and the future they envisioned for them. Moms on Board (MOB) was founded as a fund to promote family-friendly activities and accommodations at establishments and facilities. They are partnering with the Paso del Norte Community Foundation to realize their dream of building a regional all-ability park for children of all ages and abilities at Ascarate Park.

When beloved educator and track coach Arcadio “Archie” Duran Jr. died in a bus accident bringing his Irvin High School girls track team home from a track meet in Lubbock, he left a huge hole in the lives of his students, fellow teachers, and loved ones. Coach Duran’s family turned to the Paso del Norte Community Foundation to set up a scholarship fund in his memory, so they could provide scholarships for the EPISD students he cared so much about.

A Community of Philanthropy

The Paso del Norte Community Foundation’s community of philanthropy includes designated, donor-advised, scholarship, and supporting organization funds that support a wide-range of charitable programs and projects that improve health, education, social services, economic development and quality of life in our binational, tri-state region.

In 2018, we expanded our partnership with the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, welcoming them as a supporting organization under our umbrella. The Paso del Norte Health Foundation was founded in 1995 to promote health and prevent disease in the region. This new relationship allows both Foundations to better meet our shared vision and maximize operating efficiencies to ensure a greater return on investment for our community.

The Paso del Norte Community Foundation continued its partnership with the Fundación Paso del Norte para la Salud y Bienestar in order to facilitate and inspire philanthropy on both sides of the border. The Fundación Paso del Norte was established in 2015 to lead and promote partnerships and initiatives to improve health and quality of life for people in Ciudad Juárez. The Hunt Family Foundation is instrumental to this philanthropic work, matching fifty cents for ever new dollar raised by selected nonprofit organizations in Ciudad Juárez up to $200,000 a year for five years.
