Playa Drail Trail Construction Update

Construction of the 3.4-mile Playa Drain Trail from Ascarate Park to Riverside High School continues to move on schedule. Below are new photos of construction looking east from Ascarate Park and between Little Flower Rd. and Sparrow Dr.
The trail is a partnership of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation (Health Foundation), City of El Paso and El Paso Water. The Health Foundation is contributing $2.5 million for the design and construction of the trail from Ascarate Park to Riverside High School. Nonprofit organizations receive support to engage disconnected youth

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded eight grants totaling more than $1 million under the Healthy Kids Priority Area – IGNITE Initiative. The goal of the IGNITE initiative is to improve a range of health outcomes by engaging disconnected youth in the region in high quality programs during out of school hours. The Foundation refers to “disconnected youth” as people between the ages of 7-18 who are not involved in out of school activities or participating in the labor market. Funded organizations are:

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded two grants totaling more than $2.3 million under the Healthy Eating and Active Living Priority Area – HEAL Initiative. The purpose of the HEAL initiative is to make healthy eating and active living the easy choice for youth and their families.

New teen dating violence prevention curriculum shows significant effects on students

In an effort to address dating violence in schools, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation in partnership with the YWCA, and Health Advocates, developed the Me & You curriculum for middle and highs schools. Research shows that well designed and implemented teen dating violence prevention curriculum can decrease risks of being in an abusive relationship. This new dating violence prevention curricula is based on the National Sexuality Education Standards and health education standards for Texas and New Mexico. Neighborhoods in Ciudad Juárez apply for playground equipment

The Fundacion Paso del Norte para la Salud y Bienestar and FECHAC have partnered to launch “Playgrounds in the Park,” an initiative designed to get gently used playground equipment into neighborhood parks in Ciudad Juárez. The organizations have extended an invitation to neighborhood groups (consisting of 10 or more individuals) to submit proposals on the need for playground equipment in their neighborhood, how the equipment will improve health, and how the equipment and park will be maintained.

The Health Foundation and the El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium congratulate Consortium partners, Emergence Health Network, El Paso County, City of El Paso and University Medical Center, who submitted a proposal to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) Senate Bill 292 and were selected from across the state to receive funding.

Students at YISD are making healthy choices

Students at Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) are leading a more healthy and active lifestyle these days, due to the coordinated approach of students, campus staff, and student families that are learning the Coordinated Approach To Child Health or CATCH program. With support from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s (Health Foundation), HEAL Initiative and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, YISD was able to implement the CATCH program over two years in 37 elementary schools, reaching approximately 18,500 students.
